Last week, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) awarded Elkins Park, PA based Matthew T. Galati (“Matt”) its prestigious Joseph R. Minsky Award for outstanding contributions made as a young lawyer in the field of immigration and nationality law. The national-level award was bestowed upon Matt at a June 16, 2022 in-person ceremony held during the Association’s Annual Conference at the Javits Center in New York City.
In a press release, AILA heralded The Galati Law Firm’s practice focusing on investment migration, extraordinary ability cases, federal court delay and denial litigation, and representing clients in other entrepreneurial visa filings. However, “Most of [Matt’s] peers however know him as an expert in the EB-5 realm.”
AILA’s comments further discussed Matt’s nomination for the award and efforts in founding a law firm shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Mr. Galati’s move to start his own firm was a daunting challenge and one many young lawyers never take, but he has great business acumen and practice management skills, which, added to his immigration law knowledge, made him a truly exceptional young lawyer.”
Matt’s honor is the first time in twenty-two years that the Minsky Award has been bestowed upon a member of the AILA Philadelphia Chapter. Previous award winners include some of the most well-known lawyers in immigration law, including several past AILA National Presidents.
Immigration is deeply personal to Matt. The grandson of Italian immigrants, Matt was born and raised in a blue collar, western Pennsylvania immigrant town. While a 2L (George Washington University, 2010) on a study abroad program, Matt met his first “client” and future spouse. Outside of his lawyerly pursuits, Matt is an avid fan of international travel, all things related to his beloved undergraduate alma mater The University of Virginia (2007).
